Cityringen is a 16 km underground metro, running in twin bored tunnels with 17 stations and 3 ventilation / intervention shafts. Cityringen forms a circle line around the historic centre of Copenhagen and will be connected to the existing metro stations at Kongens Nytorv and Frederiksberg by transfer tunnels. Transfer facilities will also be provided at the existing railway stations at Copenhagen Central, Østerport and Nørrebro. Cityringen will be a fully automated driverless system similar to the existing Metro system in Copenhagen.
Arup, in joint venture with Cowi and Systra, are the technical advisor for the Multi-disciplinary Civil Works (MCW) package and have been responsible for the preparation of the outline design and production of the D&B tender documents. During the construction phase we are working with the client, Metroselskabet I/S as their Technical Advisor, assisting them with the tender evaluation and construction management of the project as well as carrying out the detailed design of the streetscape and architectural finishes within the station. Our commission on the project continues through to the start of operation in 2019.
Arup’s architects worked as part of a multi-disciplinary design team to deliver the MCW package and went on to deliver detailed architectural finishes for all 17 stations. The team worked closely with engineers and many Arup specialist disciplines such as fire and life safety, lighting, safety, tunnel ventilation, pedestrian modelling, construction planning, cost estimating and modelling techniques.
